In the recently published PwC Sustainability Index 2024, it was reported that ÁTVR was one of the nine companies that managed to demonstrate a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations and value chain. In 2018, ÁTVR began to publish information on the product label of most products on vinbudin.is about the estimated carbon footprint of packaging, since packaging accounts for the largest part of the carbon footprint.
The certifications that each product has are specified, both in the Web store and on the labels in the Vínbúðin stores. The catagories are; Sustainable (sjálfbært), Organic (lífrænt), Fair (sanngjarnt) and Biodynamic (bíódínamískt). The goal of product certification is to protect biological diversity and soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure good working conditions. Independent inspectors certify that the production complies with requirements and the certification is a good protection against greenwashing.
To reduce emissions in the value chain, ÁTVR is currently working with the Nordic alcohol monopolies on a project where the goal is to calculate the total carbon footprint of each product. In the future, the aim is therefore to also publish emission figures in addition to packaging figures, figures for transport, production and cultivation.
ÁTVR is proud to be successful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to be among those who have achieved the best results. With the new project on the carbon footprint of products, we are laying the foundation for continued success in sustainability.
