Soave

From the Soave region in Veneto, northern Italy, just east of the city of Verona, comes a white wine that bears the name of its place of origin. Wines from this area have been produced for centuries, although they are not as widely known as some of the other white wines made in Veneto.

The principal grape variety used in Soave wines is Garganega, which, according to the region’s regulations, must account for at least 70% of the blend. Other authorised grape varieties may also be included in smaller proportions. Garganega lends the wines their characteristic aromas of citrus fruits, flowers, pears and, at times, almonds. Soave white wines pair particularly well with fish, shellfish, light pasta dishes, salads and white meats.

There are several quality classifications within Soave. Soave DOC is the basic appellation, while Soave Classico DOC comes from the original and historic area where viticulture in the region first developed. The highest classification is Soave Superiore DOCG, which is subject to stricter production and quality requirements. The region is also home to the sweet wine Recioto di Soave DOCG.
