Lugana

Lugana is located along the southern shores of Lake Garda, on the border between the regions of Veneto and Lombardy. The area has attracted growing attention in recent years, and its popularity is unlikely to be diminished by the fact that many Icelanders flock to Lake Garda for their summer holidays.

The region's principal grape variety is Turbiana, formerly known as Trebbiano di Lugana. Despite its previous name, it is not related to Trebbiano but is instead closely related to the Verdicchio grape grown in other parts of Italy. Turbiana produces wines with notes of citrus fruits, apple and, at times, hazelnut. Some producers mature a portion of their finest wines in oak barrels. The best wines from the region can age gracefully for more than five years.

White wines from Lugana are produced in several different styles. Lugana DOC wines are fresh, fruity and generally intended to be enjoyed while relatively young. Lugana Superiore must undergo a longer maturation period before release and typically displays greater body and depth. Lugana Riserva is aged for an even longer period, resulting in more complex flavours and excellent ageing potential. The region also produces sparkling wines under the name Lugana Spumante, as well as sweet dessert wines known as Lugana Vendemmia Tardiva, which are made from late-harvested grapes.

With its vibrant acidity, Lugana pairs beautifully with seafood, shellfish, sushi, salads and vegetable-based dishes. Fuller-bodied styles such as Superiore and Riserva are excellent companions to creamy pasta dishes, chicken, white meats and mature cheeses.

Several Lugana wines are available from Vínbúðin, and if you are unsure where to find them on the shelves, our staff will be happy to assist you.
