Now that October has arrived, the harvest season in the Northern Hemisphere is well underway. Over the years, the start of the harvest has steadily moved earlier in the calendar. This is largely attributed to climate change, as rising average temperatures accelerate the ripening process of the grapes. However, this is not necessarily a positive development. Grapes need a certain amount of time to mature properly, and more often than not, slow and steady ripening produces the best results.

Europe's summer heatwaves have not gone unnoticed. For winegrowers, however, it is not only the heat itself that can pose challenges for the vine, but also the drought and water shortages that often accompany it. Grapevines are relatively resilient plants and can withstand dry conditions better than many other agricultural crops, but they do have their limits. Prolonged periods of heat and drought can cause the vine to shut down, enter a state of dormancy, or even die. Yields are also reduced, as less water is available for the grapes themselves.

Many people believe that red wine should always be served at room temperature, but this is a long-standing myth. Most red wines show their best qualities when served slightly chilled, and the correct temperature can have a significant impact on the wine’s aroma and flavour.

Natural wine is a certain ideology of winemakers that originated in the 1960s in the province of Beaujolais, France. Winemakers Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, Charly Thevenet and Guy Breton wanted to go back to the methods used before World War II. Natural, organic farming free of all synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and additives was the method in those days and "The Gang of Four", as these four winemakers were sometimes called, encouraged those old methods.
