Vínbúðin has for several years now encouraged customers to reduce the use of plastic bags by offering a wide range of multi-use bags at affordable prices. In 2018, around 29% of customers bought plastic bags and the sales of plastic bags have declined considerably in recent years.
This year there is no exception to this trend, with plastic bag sales declining by 13% in the first eight months of the year. At the same time, sales of multi-purpose bags have increased by 12% and 34,000 multi-purpose bags have already been sold during the year.
In the coming months Vínbúðin will stop using traditional plastic bags and offer biodegradable bags instead along with the multi-use bags.
These days, the "Plasticless September" campaign is underway in Iceland and it is exciting to see whether even fewer customers will buy the plastic bags during the month.
