ÁTVR's climate goals for 2030

01.07.2016

The first three months of this year broke all the heat records, according to The World Meteorological Organization. It warns that the climate is "changing with unprecedented speed."

Governments, businesses and the public therefore must take strong countermeasures. ÁTVR is one of 103 companies involved in an ambitious project by Festa and the city of Reykjavik to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize negative environmental influenses by targeted measures.

ÁTVR will show its corporate social responsibility by:
• reducing greenhouse gas emissions
• reducing waste
• implementing sustainability in business processes
• measuring the results and providing regular updates on the status of the above factors

40% decline in car emissions

The goal of ÁTVR is to reduce the use of automobiles as well as to use the most environmentally friendly cars that will be available in the future. The aim is to reduce emissions by 40% by the year 2030 compared to 2015, about 3.2% per year on average.
The current aim in waste management is to recycle 91% with the plan that it will be 98% in 2030. Landfilled waste was about 30 tons last year and the aim is for that to go down to 8 tons, a 75% decline.
ÁTVR is offsetting all direct emissions, 102 tons and flights 25 tons , 127 tons in all. Because the flight is purchased from a third party it creates a positive carbon footprint.

Car Emissions 2030

The picture shows ÁTVRs emissions from the operation of vehicles. The aim is that all ÁTVRs cars and vans will be environmentally friendly. ÁTVRs vehicles emitted 102 tons of CO2 equivalent in 2015. Burnt diesel was 41,077 liters and the hope is that fossil fuels will not be used in 2030.

The increase in 2016 is due to a larger area that ÁTVR  services. At the same time services purchased and emissions by a third party decreases. Growth in liters is estimated at 2% per year. The trucks would burn diesel fuel but utilization would be improved and emissions reduced by 3% a year. It is not estimated that they will switch to alternative energy sources. Cars and vans would be replaced by green cars, electric, hydrogen, methane or methanol when possible.

Waste - 75% decrease
The waste that derives from ÁTVR operations was 300 tons last year. The goal was to recycle 90%  and it was achieved  with 90.3% being recycled. The long-term objective is a 98% recycling rate by 2030.
Almost 30 tons were buried in 2015 with related climate pollution. If the goal of 98% recycling rate is achieved in 2030, the waste going to landfills will be 8 tons. Emissions of CO2 equivalents from landfill will go from 23 tons to 6 tons, 8% per year on average.
In comparison, the recycling rate in March 2016 was 93%, while the goal of 91% was not achieved in January and February due to maintenance projects in Akranes.
