Updated: all stores have opened now
Due to a power outage in some part of South Iceland, some of our stores may delay opening today. This applies to Vínbúðir in Hella, Hvolsvöllur, Vík and Vestmannaeyjar as of now. The shops will open as soon as electricity is restored.

Þorgerður Kristín Þráinsdóttir has been appointed the new CEO of ÁTVR, starting on September 1st. The announcement was published on the website of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, where it was noted that Þorgerður was selected from a group of nineteen applicants. Þorgerður has served as CEO of the Fríhöfnin Duty Free store since 2014, and previously worked at Lyfja hf., as Director of Stores and Marketing and Human Resources Manager.

In the recently published PwC Sustainability Index 2024, it was reported that ÁTVR was one of the nine companies that managed to demonstrate a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations and value chain. In 2018, ÁTVR began to publish information on the product label of most products on vinbudin.is about the estimated carbon footprint of packaging, since packaging accounts for the largest part of the carbon footprint.

Every effort is made to welcome customers so that everything goes as smoothly as possible, but for those who want to avoid queues, the best way is to show up at the early part of the week, early in the day! 06.10.2023 | We now scan ID

An important part of Vínbúðin's social responsibility is to ensure that customers have reached the age of 20, and the staff is therefore trained to ask the youngest customers for ID. In collaboration with Stafrænt Ísland and the National Police Commissioner, a solution has been developed to scan electronic driver's licenses. Of course, it is still possible to use other traditional IDs or passports.

19.09.2023 | Arrangement of fees for quality control ruled illegal

The Ministry of Finance and Economy ruled today that ÁTVR‘s charging for the collection of alcohol samples for quality control was not based on the law. The fee was based on Article 43 of the product selection regulation, no. 1106/2015. "Due to quality control, ÁTVR is always authorized, at the expense of the supplier, to take a sample of a product from the product inventory or ask the supplier for a sample." ​The ministry's conclusion is based on the fact that there is no special authorization in the law for the charge prescribed by the regulation.

09.08.2023 | Pricing in Vínbúðin

ÁTVR's pricing of products in Vínbúðin is determined by laws approved by Parliament, as well as by regulations issued by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. The law states that the markup of ÁTVR shall be based on the percentage of alcohol; 18% on alcohol with a 22% or lower percentage of alcohol and 12% if the percentage of alcohol is higher than 22%.

Reykjavík District Court confirmed ÁTVR's decision to refuse to sell alcoholic caffeinated beverages in its stores. ÁTVR's rejection was based on the law, which states that it is permitted to refuse to sell alcoholic drinks that contain caffeine and other stimulants.

08.12.2022 | Deliveries to Hrísey

ÁTVR has made an arangement with Hríseyjarbúðin on the delivery of products from Vínbúðin's web shop. The goal is to improve service of customers in Hrísey, who can now access the entire range of products available at the Vínbúðin stores. It is Vínbúðin's hope that this service will be well received. In the Web shop customers can browse the product selection, order products and have them sent to the Vínbúðin store of their choice - free of charge. If an order is placed before 2 PM, same day pick up is available at the warehouse in Stuðlaháls 2. In the product list the entire selection of products available at Vínbúðin at any given time can be viewed, and it is also simple to place a special order for the products that are not available on the Vínbúðin's shelves.

Gift cards are now available in all Vínbúðin stores and you can choose any amount. You can also buy the gift cards in the Web shop with fixed amounts: 5,000,, 10,000, 15,000 or 20,000 ISK .

Vinbudin in Hafnarfjörður will have longer opening hours from Oktober 3rd. Opening hours will be Mondays to Fridays from 10AM to 8PM and Saturdays from 11AM to 6PM.

Today we opened a new store at Miðvangur 13 in Egilsstaðir (near Bónus, A4 and Lindex). The new store is considerably more spacious than before and the product range has been significantly expanded. ÁTVR has decided not to appeal the decision of the Reykjavík District Court on the dismissal of cases that were filed with the aim of stopping the sale of alcohol in domestic online stores. ÁTVR considers that it is not in accordance with the law, violates ÁTVR's monopoly and is in direct opposition to the current alcohol- and public health policy, but the district court dismissed the cases.

A total of 26,386 thousand liters of alcohol were sold in Vínbúðin in 2021. In comparison, 26,810 thousand liters were sold in 2020, with overall sales decreasing by 1.6% between years. Sales declined in most categories. Sales in two categories increased between years; sparkling wine / champagne which increased by 17% and mixed drinks which increased by 22% between years.

Vínbúðin Eiðistorgi has now been reopened after thorough renovations. The store has been expanded considerably and the beer is now in a walk-in cooler. The product selection has also been increased considerably and a lot has been done to make the customer experience as good as possible.

Vínbúðin Heiðrún now has the entire product range that Vínbúðin has to offer. The selection of beers has been increased considerably and now there is a special cooler for so-called specialty beers. Vínbúðin in Skútuvogur has also had a large selection of beers, but not all brands are available there at the moment.

All stores will be closed on the Ascension Day on Thursday 21 May. On Wednesday, May 20th, most our Vínbúðin stores will open as on Fridays. All stores in the capital area will therefore be open from 11-19, but our stores at Dalvegur, Skeifa and Skútuvogur are open from 9-20.

Vínbúðin has for several years now encouraged customers to reduce the use of plastic bags by offering a wide range of multi-use bags at affordable prices. In 2018, around 29% of customers bought plastic bags and the sales of plastic bags have declined considerably in recent years.

Vinbudin in Selfoss has now moved to new location at Larsenstræti 3. The store is now bigger and brighter with a significantly bigger walk-in cooler. The new store is very accessible and has plenty of parking spaces.

The store in Reykjanesbær is being renovated. The layout of the store is being changed completely and the product selection increased. The calculations are based on our wine advisors‘ many years of experience, and are only to be used as a guideline. Vínbúðin received the highest score of all companies in Íslenska ánægjuvogin (Icelandic Customer Satisfaction Committee), presented this morning. This is the third consecutive year that Vínbúðins‘s customers give it their highest rating. Vínbúðin received a score of 73.8. For comparison, the average of all companies in this survey was 63.0. The goal of Íslenska ánægjuvogin is to provide organizations with coordinated measurements of customer satisfaction, as well as factors that affect customer satisfaction such as image, quality accessment and customer loyalty. We are very proud of this accomplishment and thank our customers for their vote of confidence. We are determined to do even better in all areas, whether it be in service or social responsibility.

26.11.2015 | Now in Spöngin

Now we have opened the 50th store in Spöngin, in a bright and open space. Facilities are all exemplary, both for customers and staff. A defined cooling area is for the beer and in all design we emphasized on work benefits for employees.

ÁTVR recently signed a declaration to take action on climate change along with 103 other icelandic companies and organizations. The goal with the declaration is to reduce greenhouse gas emission and waste.

12.11.2015 | Vínbúðin Neskaupstað has moved

Vínbúðin Neskaupstaður has been moved to Hafnarbraut 15. The new location is central and the access for customers excellent. The opening hours are the same as before; Monday -Friday 14-18.
