Alcohol and tobacco sales in 2018 and development of sales in recent years

Just under 22 million liters of alcohol were sold in Vínbúðin stores in 2018. This is a 0.54% increase since 2017 and the largest amount sold in one year so far. Viewed by categories the sales of red wine decreased by 0.49%, white wine sales decreased by 2.42%, beer sales increased by 0.48% and the key element here is that the sales for other types of beer than lager increased by 6%. Sales of mixed/blended beverages increased by 26%.

There has been a lot of interest in the sale of champagne, which is a subcategory of sparkling wine. Sales of sparkling wine increased by 20% and sales of champagne specifically by almost 25%. In 2018 a total of 14,389 liters of champagne were sold, but 15,920 liters were sold in 2007, so that number has not been reached yet. 


The number of customers was 4,996 thousand, an increase of 1.6% since 2017.


About 882 thousand cartons of cigarettes were sold, which is a 3% reduction from 2017. Around 4,478 thousand cigars were sold in 2018, which is a 7.4% reduction from 2017. 
 7,642 kg of smoked tobacco was sold, which is 9.9%. reduction from 2017 and  44,671 kg of snuff, an increase of 18.7% from 2017.
