ÁTVR is owned by the Icelandic state and works under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. The company is responsible for the following tasks:
- Purchasing alcohol and tobacco for wholesale
- Inventory and distribution of alcohol to the outlets
- Operations of stores and customer service
- Inventories, wholesale and distribution of tobacco
- To ensure that all tobacco products are labelled according to the Tobacco Control Act
- Levying and collection of tobacco taxes
- Other tasks related to the retail sale of alcohol and the wholesale of tobacco
